Facilities

For day programs, the facilities vary greatly, however we aim to ensure that students have access to toilets and shelter where possible (depending on the site).

The Sunshine Coast Environmental Education Centre has an office at the Maroochy Wetlands Sanctuary. Facilities at the Wetlands Sanctuary include a static display in the Canecutters' barracks, a theatrette where slides and videos are shown and which acts as an indoor classroom.

There are two sheds or undercover areas, one adjacent to the office and the other down by the Maroochy River. A track and extensive boardwalk extends from the Environmental Centre some 1000 metres to the river.

A pontoon on the river allows for boat access to the Sanctuary and is an ideal site for student learning experiences. The Environmental Centre is serviced by environmentally friendly Clivus Multrum self-composting toilets.

Self-guided walks are available for groups or individuals who access the Sanctuary privately.

Comprehensive bird lists are available and identify some 170 species of birds which inhabit the Sanctuary.

Mosquito numbers are closely monitored in the summer months and a mozzie meter is installed which recommends the level of protection required.
